　　1.It is a wise father that knows his own child ,but today a man can boost his paternal (fatherly)wisdom---or at least confirm that he’s the kid’s dad.

　　【分析】并列复合句。由but连接的两个并列分句。第一个分句是强调句，强调主语a wise father;第二个分句中or连接两个并列谓语，其中that引导的从句作confirm的宾语。

　　【译文】贤父知其子。但是，如今男人却可以提升自己的父性智慧——或者说，至少可以确认自己是孩子的父亲。

　　【点拨】1)boost 是及物动词，意为“推进，提高，增加”。2)paternal意为“父亲的，父方的”，与其对应的词是maternal“母亲的，母方的”。

　　【临摹】威廉精神欠佳，他需要度个假以振作起来。

　　2.More than 60,000 people have purchased the PTKs since they first became availablewithout prescriptions last year , according to Doug Fogg , chief operating office of Identigene ,which makes the over-the-counter kits.

　　【分析】复合句。句子的主干为More than 60,000 people have purchased the PTKs...。Since引导时间状语从句;according to Doug Fogg为插入语，其后的 chief operating office of Identigene是DougFogg的同位语;which引导的非限定性定语从句修饰Identigene。

　　【译文】根据Identigene(一家生产可以在柜台上出售的工具包的公司)的首席运营官道格·福格所说，从去年不需要处方就能购买后，已经有超过6万人购买了亲子鉴定工具包。

　　【点拨】1)prescription 意为“处方，药方，处方上开出的药”。2)over-the-counter是合成词，意思是“可以在柜台上卖的药”，指非处方药，一般缩写成OTC。

　　语法拓展 more than结构的理解与翻译

　　1)“more than+动词或名词”表示“不仅是，非常，十分”等。例如：Because of its intimacy , radio isusually more than just a medium ; it is company.收音机与我们的生活息息相关，所以它不只是媒体，更是我们的伙伴。

　　2)“more than+形容词”表示“非常”。英文中，more than后面可以接一个形容词，这时more than 本身相当于一个程度副词，用来修饰形容词，可理解为“非常，十分”。例如：The USA remains more thancapable of holding Iraq down,while confronting North Korea and Iran-its next main targets.美国在推翻伊拉克的同时，完全还有实力与其接下来的两个主要打击目标—朝鲜和伊朗—来对抗。

　　3)“more than+数字”表示“多于”。例如本句。

　　4)Nothing more then结构，表示“只不过是”，类似于nothing but 短语。例如：The individual TVviewer invariably senses that he or she is nothing more than an anonymous, statisticallyinsignificant part of a huge and diverse audience.每一位电视观众总会觉得，在众多形形色色的观众当中，自己只不过是无足轻重的一份子。

　　5)No less than/nothing less than结构：这里的no less than相当于no more than 的反义短语，表示“不少于···”;nothing less than是nothing more than的反义短语，表示“不亚于··· ，相当于···”。例如：This alone demonstrates that the television business is not an easy world to survive in,afact underlined by statistics that show that out of eighty European television networks, no lessthan 50% took a loss in 1989.这一点就足以证明，要在电视行业里生存下来并非易事。统计数字尤其说明了这一事实—在八十年代欧洲电视网中，多达50%在1989年亏损。

　　6)More than...can表示“达到不可能的程度”或“简直不能”，此句式中的can形式上是肯定的，而实际上意义是否定。例如：The beauty of the place is more than I can describe.那地方的景色之美简直让我无法形容。

　　【分析】复合句。句子的主干是Among the mostpopular : paternity and kinship testing...。因主句省略了谓语动词，此处冒号相当于be动词are。Which引导定语从句，先行词是paternity and kinship testing。定语从句本身又是由and连接的并列句，which在定语从句中作两个use的宾语，put up for adoption是过去分词短语作kids的定语。

　　【译文】在基因检测中，最受欢迎的是父子血缘关系测试——被收养的孩子可以利用这个测试找到自己生物学上的亲戚，家庭也可以用此来追查被受养孩子的下落。

　　【点拨】1)track down 意思是“跟踪找到，追查到”。2)put up for adoption指“将···送给别人收养”。

　　4.This DNA can reveal genetic information about only one or two ancestors , eventhough , for example , just three generations back people also have six other great-grand-parents or , four generation back , 14 other great-great-grandparents .

　　【分析】复合句。句子的主干为This DNA can reveal genetic information... 。Even though引导让步状语从句，从句由or连接的两个并列分句构成。并列结构中的同等句子成分省略。

　　【译文】举例来说，只要上溯三代，一个人就会有八个曾祖父母，或者上溯四代，就会有十六个曾曾祖父母，即便如此，这种DNA只能揭示一到两位祖先的基因信息。
