　　1. This "added-worker effect" could support thesafety net offered by unemployment insurance ordisability insurance to help families weather badtimes.

　　【分析】简单句。句子主干为This “added-worker effect”could support the safety net。过去分词结构 offeredby...disability insurance作后置定语;不定式结构tohelp…作目的状语。

　　【译文】这种“附加劳动力效应”可以加强由失业保险和伤残保险所提供的社会保障体系，以帮助家庭渡过难关。

　　【点拨】注意句中的几个表达：safety net指“社会保障体系”，unemployment insurance指“失业保险”，disability insurance指“伤残保险”。

　　2. Steelworkers, airline employees, and now those in the auto-industry are joining millions offamilies who must worry about interest rates, stock market fluctuation, and the harsh realitythat they may outlive their retire-ment money.

　　【分析】复合句。主句主干为：Steelworkers, airline employees, and now those...are joining millionsof families。Who引导的定语从句修饰families;在该从句中，名词短语 interest rates, stock marketfluctuation 及 the harsh reality构成并列平行结构，共同作worry about的宾语。 句末that引导的从句作reality的同位语。

　　【译文】钢铁工人、航空公司雇员以及现在的汽车业职员正在加入那些担心利率、股市波动和退休金不够用的数百万家庭的行列。

　　3. For much of the past year,President Bush campaigned to move Social Security to a saving-accounting model, with retirees trading much all of their guaranteed payments for payments depending on investment returns.

　　【分析】简单句。句子主干为President Bush campaigned to move Social Security to a saving-account model句首介词短语作时间状语;介词with引导的独立主格结构“with+名词+现在分词”作伴随状语，其中现在分词短语depending on…作payments的后置定语。

　　【译文】在去年的大部分时间里，布什总统致力于把社会保障推广成储蓄账户模式;在这种模式下，退休人员将他们大部分或全部有保障的退休金变成依赖回报率的投资。

　　【点拨】campaign作名词时意为“战役;运动;活动”，作动词时意为“参加活动，搞运动;作战”。

　　4. Both the absolute cost of healthcare and the share of it borne by families have risen and newly fashionable health-savings plans are spreading from legislative halls to Wal-Mart workers, with much higher deductibles and a large new dose of investment risk for families' future healthcare.

　　【分析】并列句。前一分句的主干是the cost and the share... have risen。后一分句的主干是 health-savings plans are spreading from...to...，其后的 with...结构作伴随状语。

　　【译文】医疗保健的实际支出和需要家庭承担的份额增加了—而新近流行的医疗储蓄计划正从立法大厅蔓延到沃尔玛职工，但是同时可免除项目更多了，家庭未来医疗保健的投资风险也更高了。

　　【点拨】注意句中的几个表达：healthcare意为“医疗保险”，health saving意为“医疗储蓄”，legislative halls意为“立法机构”，在美国指国会。
