　　British voters are heading to the polls Thursday, and it looks as if it’s going to be a nail-biter.Political prediction markets suggest that it’s basically a 50-50 bet as to whether the Conservative prime minister, David Cameron, will serve another termor be ousted by Labour’s leader, Ed Miliband.I can recall very few elections where the bookies couldn’t pick a favorite by election eve.

　　词汇突破：

　　1.nail-biter 令人紧张，胶着(常用来表示难分胜负。)

　　The two teams are in nail - biter. Neither has been able to take a commanding lead.

　　两支队伍正在紧张鏖战之中,谁也无法取得领先.

　　2. Conservative 保守党

　　3. ousted v. 驱逐( oust的过去式和过去分词 );革职;罢黜;剥夺

　　英国选民周四将前往投票站，而目前看来选情颇为胶着。

　　第二句：Political prediction markets suggest that it’s basically a 50-50 bet /as to whether the Conservative prime minister, David Cameron, will serve another term or be ousted by Labour’s leader, Ed Miliband.(状语)

　　解析：这个句子的难点是：

　　It is a 50-50 bet as to whether A or B.

　　A 和B的概率是一半一半;

　　这里的A= the Conservative prime minister, David Cameron, will serve another term

　　B= (the Conservative prime minister, David Cameron will) be ousted by Labour’s leader, Ed Miliband.

　　翻译的时候可以这样来处理的：

　　参考译文：政治预测市场，来自保守党的现任首相戴维·卡梅伦(David Cameron)大概有一半的几率获得连任，也有一半的几率被工党党魁埃德·米利班德(Ed Miliband)拉下马。

　　第三句：I can recall very few elections wherethe bookies couldn’t pick a favorite by election eve.

　　别看这个句子短，非常重要的考点有两个;

　　第一是where的用法：where这里引导的是一个定语从句，就是一个连词，翻译为中文的时候不用翻译。

　　第二是双重否定：few和could not;

　　翻译的时候可以直接处理为肯定;

　　参考译文：在我的记忆之中，几乎每次投票的前夜，博彩业总能选出一个热门人选。

　　当然也可以结合语境做以下的翻译：

　　在我的记忆中，没有几次选举会像现在这样，到了投票前夜，博彩业还选不出热门。
