　　先后获得国家杰出青年科学基金、优秀中青年人才专项基金、霍英东基金、国家教委“跨世纪人才计划”基金等（均为首届）资助，在国内率先开展并带动原子团簇科学领域的研究，已发表了300多篇学术论文。2004年4月30日，本人领导的课题组合成C50Cl10的研究成果在美国《科学》杂志发表。曾担任教育部化学教育指导委员会副主任，参与全国高校化学教学的指导与改革工作。无论科研与社会工作如何繁忙、以及近年必须跨海去漳州校区上课，始终坚持教授大学本科一年级的基础课。作为学科带头人，创立了厦大无机化学博士点，积极培养和引进人才，使原来十分薄弱的无机化学学科得到较快发展，学科的青年教师已有7人先后获得国家自然科学基金，在国际顶级学术刊物上发表多篇论文。1995年当选为全国先进工作者。2000年被教育部聘为“长江学者计划”特聘教授。2001年当选为中国科学院院士。
