  Google AI programme beats top-ranked Go player

  柯洁还是输了:阿尔法狗实在太出色了 我输得没脾气

  Google’s computer programme AlphaGo beat the world’s top-ranked player in the ancient Chinese board game Go on Tuesday, re-affirming the arrival of what its developers tout as a ground-breaking new form of artificial intelligence.

  围棋,是古代中国的一种棋盘游戏。周二,谷歌旗下的计算机程序阿尔法狗打败了世界顶级围棋选手。阿尔法狗的研发人员认为,这再次证明了人工智能开拓性时代的到来。

  AlphaGo took the first encounter in a three-game series against brash 19-year-old Chinese world number one Ke Jie, who before the game called the programme a "cold machine" and vowed never to play it again after this week.

  19岁的中国围棋选手柯洁与阿尔法狗将展开三场对决,今天的比赛是双方之间的第一场较量。赛前,柯洁曾说阿尔法狗是冷冰冰的机器,这周比赛之后再也不会与其对战。

  AlphaGo, which was developed by London-based AI company DeepMind Technologies, stunned the Go community a year ago when it trounced South Korean grandmaster Lee Se-Dol four games to one -- the first time a computer programme beat a top player in a full contest.

  阿尔法狗是伦敦DeepMind公司研发的人工智能程序。一年前,阿尔法狗以4:1的成绩打败韩国围棋大师李世石,这是计算机程序首次在完整的围棋游戏中击败专业选手,一度引起人们的震惊。

  The win over Lee was hailed as a technology landmark, fuelling visions of a brave new world of AI that can not only drive cars and operate "smart homes", but potentially help mankind figure out some of the most complex scientific, technical, and medical problems.

  阿尔法狗的取胜被认为是技术领域的里程碑,人们开始大胆畅想人工智能新领域的前景:人工智能不仅可以驾驶汽车和操作 “智能家庭”,也许还能帮助人类解决更为复杂的科学、技术和医学难题。

  Last year’s win set the stage for a much-anticipated contest with Ke in the eastern Chinese city of Wuzhen.

  继去年赢得比赛之后,阿尔法狗今年将与柯洁在中国东部城市乌镇展开万众瞩目的对决。

  Ke, who has been the top-ranked player in the 3,000-year-old game and has previously described himself as a "pretentious", boldly said last year "Bring it on!" and vowed never to lose to a machine.

  围棋具有3000多年的悠久历史。去年,“自命不凡”的顶级棋手柯洁曾扬言:“来吧!我永远不会输给一个机器。”。

  Computer programmes have previously beaten humans in cerebral contests, starting with IBM’s Deep Blue defeating chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov in 1997.

  此前,计算机程序就曾在脑力比赛中战胜过人类选手。1997年,美国国际商用机器公司(IBM)研制的“深蓝”超级计算机首次击败国际象棋世界冠军加里·卡斯帕罗夫。

  But AlphaGo’s success is considered the most significant for AI yet due to the complexity of Go, which has an incomputable number of move options, putting a premium on creative thinking and the ability to learn.

  但是围棋比赛非常复杂,选手必须进行大量的计算,需要创造性思维和学习能力,因此阿尔法狗的胜利对人工智能而言更为重要。

  Ke has alternated between awe and disdain for AlphaGo.

  对于阿尔法狗,柯洁既充满敬畏,又有些不屑。

  On Monday night, Ke said on China’s Twitter-like Weibo platform that "the advancement of AI has far exceeded our imagination" but added he would never play it again after this week.

  周一晚上,柯洁在微博上表示人工智能的发展远超乎我们的想象,但这周之后我再也不会与它对战。

  "It will always be a cold machine. Compared to humans, I cannot feel its passion and longing for the game of Go," he said.

  柯洁说:“阿尔法狗始终是冷冰冰的机器,与人类相比,我感觉不到它对围棋的热情和热爱。”

  Go involves two players alternately laying black and white stones on a grid, seeking to seal off the most territory.

  围棋比赛为两人对战,双方依次在网格上放置黑子和白子,以占领更多的地盘。

  Proponents had considered Go a bastion in which human ingenuity would remain superior, at least for the foreseeable future.

  支持者认为在围棋领域,人类的聪明才智更胜一筹,至少在可预见的将来是如此。

  AlphaGo uses two sets of "deep neural networks" containing millions of connections similar to neurons in the brain.

  阿尔法狗采用两套“深度神经网络”,其中包含与大脑神经元类似的数百万个神经连接。

  It is partly self-taught -- having played millions of games against itself after initial programming.

  初始化编程之后,阿尔法狗就拥有了自我学习能力,自己与自己下了上百万盘围棋。
