　　Close to 10 million students participate in the national college entrance exams. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening.

　　近千万学生参加了高考，那么高考到底是怎么回事儿?

　　There is a war-like atmosphere in the classroom that is accentuated with a countdown board that starts 600 days before the date of the exam. Most parents swallow their disgust for their partners and refrain from getting a divorce so as not to cause the student any stress - not necessarily out of concern for any emotional trauma, but out of fear of affecting their grades. Newspapers and television programs invite nutrition experts to talk about super foods that help boost the students’ stamina and intelligence so they can pass the exam with flying colors.

　　Days before the exam, your parents and your teachers seem to soften down a bit. They don’t yell nearly as much. They still want you to study hard, but maybe not so hard that you burn out. You are told to "keep a normal attitude," whatever that’s supposed to mean.

　　考试前几天，父母和老师们似乎放松了一些。他们不会像往常一样大喊大叫。他们仍然希望你努力学习，但是却不是好像要把你掏空一样那么努力。他们告诉你要保持“平常心”，不管这句话到底是什么意思。

　　The night before the exam, you are told to go to bed at 9 pm, even though for the past three years you are used to staying up until 3 am to finish all the mock exam questions. Everybody keeps telling you that this exam is going to decide the rest of your life, so you cannot sleep a wink.

　　On the day of the exam, you are told to wear red underwear, or whatever piece of clothing that is believed to bring you the best of luck. You wake up sleepily to a breakfast that you’ve only seen in posh magazines. Then you go to battle with a million other students and their parents. Goodbye to high school.

　　在考试当天，人们告诉你要穿红色的内衣，或者任何一件能够带来好运的衣服。醒来后昏昏欲睡的你看到了一份只在时尚杂志上才看到过的早餐。然后你就和百万学子及家长一起奔赴战场。别了吧，高中!

　　But you know all that. Here is what you don’t know. You spend the summer hanging out with your friends or breaking up with high school sweethearts. You decide to learn an instrument so that you can show off in college. You get plastic surgery. You travel.

　　但是上面这些都是你知道的，下面一些则是你不知道的事情。高考过后的夏天你可能会和朋友们一起瞎混;和高中的情侣分道扬镳;或者你会决定学习一门乐器，从而在大学里大放光彩;你会去做整形手术;你会去旅行...

　　You get into the college of your dreams, or not. You promise your buddies you will write to each other - or keep in touch on social media. You promise to get together during summer and winter vacations. Maybe you do manage to stay in touch for a while, but then the correspondence gets less frequent. You meet new people. First summer break from college, all of your classmates show up for a reunion. By the end of college, you can hardly get five people together.

　　你可能会进入梦想中的大学，也可能不会。你向好兄弟们做出承诺，会给他们写信——或者在社交媒体上保持联系。你承诺在暑假或者寒假的时候会出来聚聚。但是也许你可能只是在一段时间里没有联系，而后来你们的通信就不会那么频繁了。你会交到新朋友。大学第一个暑假，你所有同学都会聚在一起。但等到大学结束的时候，凑到5个人就已经很难了。

　　You realize all the stuff you learned in high school is of no use in college. You realize all your classmates who come from big cities seem more well-read and more versatile than you. You go into college wanting to read all the books in the library. You won’t. You barely have time to enjoy your newly-earned freedom before your parents start interrogating you about the future, going to grad school and finding a job.

　　你会意识到高中学到的东西在大学没什么用;你会意识到你所有来自大城市的同学都比你有涵养，比你更多才多艺;你梦想着读完图书馆所有的书，但是你最终却没有;你几乎没有时间来享受这份新获得的自由，直到你的父母开始询问你的未来、读研和找工作的事儿。

　　Then you enter real life. You meet all kinds of people. And that’s when you realize maybe the scores and exams aren’t really that big of a deal after all.

　　然后你才会开始真正的生活。你会遇到形形色色的朋友，到那时你才会真正意识到高考分数真不是什么大事儿。
