　　解析：句子主干为there be句型，即“There is a great deal of this kind of nonsense”，整体顺译即可。其中，“a great deal of ”译为“许多，大量”，“this kind of”译为“这种”。“in the medical journals”为介词短语做状语，修饰谓语动词“is”，即为修饰整个there be句型，故翻译的时候可以放在整个there be句型之前翻译。

　　其次，“which, when taken up by broadcasters and the lay press, generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms”为从句嵌套结构，是which引导的定语从句中嵌套when引导的时间状语从句。“which generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms” 为定语从句，修饰核心名词“nonsense”;鉴于which定语从句较长，翻译时顺译即可，单独成句。
