The government should further strengthen the supervision and control of the production and circulation of plastic bags. What’s more, all social sectors should show their strong support. The shops can offer small gifts or discount to the customers who bring their own bags. Designers can design beautiful cloth bags to attract shoppers to use them.

After a six-month’s grace period, the restrictions took effect last June. Yet, “White pollution” is far from in the bag. Experts say we discarded over 100 billion plastic bags last year, 90 percent of which end up in rivers, oceans, or landfills, where they can take up to 1000 years to decompose.

　　To end this evil, a movement against the plastic bag should be carried out as soon as possible. The local government should make it illegal to offer plastic shopping bags. In the meantime, paper bags, degradable as they are, should also be banned. As making paper bags consumes millions of trees and it actually takes more energy to make paper bags than plastic. We should not trade one evil for another. Last but not least, we should encourage people to go green and to use reusable cloth bags when they need them.
