　　New York is also home, of course, to a lot of academic linguists, and one of them creates an organisation called the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA), which searches for speakers of unusual tongues from the city’s immigrant masses. The ELA, which was set up last year by Daniel Kaufman, has worked in detail on 12 languages since its inception. It has codified their grammars, pronunciations, word-formation patterns, songs and legends.

　　纽约同样聚集着很多语言学家，其中一位语言学家创立了濒危语言联盟(简称ELA)，目的是在该市的外来移民中找出会说特殊语言的人。濒危语言联盟于去年由丹尼尔·考夫曼创立，自创立起已收录了12种语言的详细资料，包括整理这些语言的语法、发音、构词法、歌谣以及传说故事。
